Tropic Thunder

Scary Movie 4Let's assume that any gimlet-eyed son in the high-energy household of famous comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara would have had a rare opportunity to observe creative self-absorption and celebrity neurosis at close range. Still, that accident of showbiz genetics doesn't do credit to Ben Stiller's unique powers of ruthless insight into the Homo thespianus, and to his talents for a hilarious conjuring of the species. A good Stiller project, from Zoolander to Dodgeball, is likely to be about a voluble extrovert of exquisite short-guy egotism, with insecurity nipping at his shoes and fury goading him on to fine eruptions of pomposity as delightful for the audience as they are blood-pressure-raising for the blusterer. Now comes Tropic Thunder, the very best and funniest of them, about a small army of such strutting peacocks, a cast of actors off on an acting adventure on the set of a war picture in the jungles of Southeast Asia. ..More...

The Mummy-3

Scary Movie 4There have already been quite a few summer action blockbuster movies this year, and the "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" tries to sneak in and make an impact. It is not going to succeed. With "The Dark Knight" already getting incredible critical and box office success, any other movie following that one is doomed, at the best, to be mediocre. The Mummy franchise returns for a third time and the tragedy of this instalment is just how much of a good thing it squanders. It had millions of dollars and some semblance of an interesting story. But it is unforgivable for the way it wastes some very fine Asian actors like Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh... More...
Bottle shock

Scary Movie 4Full of wonderful characters and smart, witty dialogue--not to mention the wonders of Napa--Bottle Shock is based on the true story of the beginnings of the California wine industry, and its underdog triumph at the blind Paris wine tasting competition of 1976. Using this as a backdrop, the film is really a character study focusing primarily on the rocky relationship between novice vintner Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman) and his happy-go-lucky son Bo (Chris Pine). Despite the generational and other gaps between them, they both have a common goal of producing the perfect Chardonnay at the Chateau Montelena vineyard Jim in the early ‘70s. By happenstance, Brit Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) is in Napa on the prowl for the perfect bottle for the upcoming French wine tasting contest he is sponsoring in France, which he thinks will boost business for his money-losing Paris wine shop. The elder Barrett passes on the idea,..More...
Pineapple Express

Scary Movie 4The film starts off in 1937 in a secret underground government laboratory where tests are being performed on the effects of marijuana. Private Miller (Bill Hader) is a subject in a test to decide if marijuana should be illegal. Miller, obviously high, begins to insult the government and his superiors. As a result, the government deems marijuana illegal and quickly "disposes of" Private Miller. Jumping to the present, Dale Denton (Rogen), a 25 year-old process serving stoner, visits his girlfriend Angie (Amber Heard) at her high school and argues about accepting an invitation to eat dinner with her family. Next, Dale visits his equally stoned dealer, Saul Silver (Franco), to purchase cannabis. Saul offers him a rare strain of marijuana called Pineapple Express. After making his purchase, Dale agrees to smoke a 'cross-shaped' joint with Saul before leaving. He then leaves his apartment, smokes more, and ends up in front of the house of the next person he is supposed to serve, Ted Jones (Gary Cole), who Saul has mentioned as a drug lord...More...
